Pray for Europe – 2

flag-1198978_960_720On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth. (Isaiah 62:6-7 ESV)

Post Christian Europe? Europe had the privilege of being the centre of Christendom for the past five hundred years. As Christian scholarship and evangelisation efforts declined in the ME under Islam, Europe rose to the challenge. Many gave up their livelihoods, comforts and even their lives for the sake of the gospel. For a time, it was the continent of martyrs.

Perhaps modern Europeans are too close, both in time and space, to be objective about the benefits that Christianity has brought them. How proudly some of them describe their culture as ‘post Christian’? In Europe, religion is the object of scorn, and described as the cause of all trouble and conflict in the world. For people like myself, whose Orthodox Christian ancestors have lived as minorities in non-Christian lands for centuries, this seems like appalling ingratitude. Even the nominal Christians among us, and there are many, treat our Christian heritage with respect. But the people of Europe have forgotten the warning of Moses –

” Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands… Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God… never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy… If you ever forget the Lord your God… you will certainly be destroyed.” (Deuteronomy 8:9-19 NLT)

How Europe has fallen! The church has lost its vision – with its light hidden beneath the bushel, and its salt lacking saltiness. The consequences have been dire – there has been a steady decline in moral standards, family values and social cohesion. Children growing up in broken homes lack the resilience and common sense to cope with pressures of the twenty first century. The wealth and influence accumulated in past generations can carry them only so far.

The false security of living in the bubble of a welfare state has weakened Europe’s moral backbone. The wickedness of same sex marriage, abortion and assisted suicide is lost to them. Besides, the modern gods of secular humanism and individualism demand not just allegiance, but blood sacrifices. To silence whatever remains of a Christian conscience in Europe, such evil practices are presented as necessary instruments for promoting women’s rights and human dignity.

“I will make youths their leaders, and the unstable will govern them” (Isaiah 3:4 HCSB). Europe’s elected leaders are like children clinging to the skirts of an evil and imperious EU – they are like lambs setting out to make deals with the wolves occupying leadership positions in China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Russia. The unstated goal of the EU rulers is to shape a Europe so removed from to its Christian roots – where human life and morals have no value. Europe is now ripe for judgment, and its old enemy has set up Trojan horses everywhere.

Belgium or ‘Belgistan’ and its troubles with its Sharia enclaves are well known. Remember the recent terrorist attacks on Brussels. It is worth studying how these problems began.

“In 1967, King Baudouin lent the building [Oriental Pavilion of the National Exhibition] to King Faisal ibn Abd al-Aziz of Saudi Arabia with a 99-year rent-free lease, on an official visit to Belgium as part of negotiations to secure oil contracts. The building was turned into a place of worship for the use Muslim immigrants to Belgium, which at the time were notably from Morocco and Turkey. As part of the deal, imams from the Gulf area would be hired although their orthodox salafist were a different tradition, according to George Dallemagne, to that of the more open-minded immigrants but their teachings would over time turn them into a more orthodox tradition and imams would discourage immigrants from integrating into the Belgian society…”From Wikipaedia (‘Great Mosque of Brussels’)

“Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images…They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator – who is for ever praised. Amen.” (Romans 1:22-23, 25 NIV)

Many of the richer countries of Europe suffer from similar problems. As rapidly growing Muslim populations replace indigenous Europeans, many of the capital cities are on the way to becoming mini ‘Islambols’, ‘where Islam abounds’. As the late Libyan leader Gaddafi once boasted “We have 50 million Muslims in Europe. There are signs that Allah will grant Islam victory in Europe—without swords, without guns, without conquest—will turn it into a Muslim continent within a few decades?”

Blind to the past, and governed by leaders ignorant of history and greedy for short-term economic gains, the problem has worsened. The recent destabilising wars in the ME instigated or supported by the West, has led to millions of Muslim migrants arriving at the gates of Europe demanding entry, freedom and rights, but unwilling to integrate.

In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to my soul, “Flee like a bird to your mountain, for behold, the wicked bend the bow; they have fitted their arrow to the string to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:1-3 ESV)

Yes, there are many righteous people in Europe who pray and intercede for their nations. It is our duty to support these Christians by praying for them, till the tide is turned back, and God sends a revival. For, there are now only two options – repentance and revival, or judgment at hands of a resurgent Islam. Europe will suffer the same fate as those formerly Christian people of the ME and North Africa, if they do not repent.

What times we live in! These are days reminiscent of the times when Israel and Judah, enjoying all the blessings of God in the land of their inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey, broke their covenant with Him, and went after other gods, that were not gods at all. They mocked and persecuted the prophets God sent to warn them; their unfaithfulness ended in defeat before their enemies, exile and captivity.

May God grant us all the grace to pray diligently as God commanded the watchman of Jerusalem.

Father, we lift Europe before Your throne of grace. Remember their faithfulness in the past centuries. For the sake of Your promises, and for the sake of those who were martyred for the Christian faith, please forgive them their sins, for You are a faithful and merciful God. Deliver them from the hands of their enemies. Please don’t let Islam take root in their lands. Send a mighty revival, and save their people. Let Europe once again become a Christian continent. Give them willing hearts to serve You, so that it may go well with them and their children. In Jesus’ name.
